First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative
The First Lady’s Scholarship Initiative was established as a way to both honor the contribution of Alabama A&M University first ladies and to reward deserving students who exemplify the spirit of university founder, Dr. William Hooper Councill.
Since the university’s inception in 1875, first ladies have played a definitive role in helping to preserve the legacy of the university and prepare its students for the future. The scholarship initiative is one way in which the university is able to pay tribute to their continued efforts.
Fulfillment of the scholarship relies on contributions and participation from students, faculty and staff, alumni, community leaders, churches, and the community at large. The scholarship is open to sophomores, juniors, rising seniors, and graduate students who are enrolled full-time. Scholarships are awarded to one undergraduate student from each of the four university colleges and one to a graduate student.
